What do distinguished chemist Maurice Brookhart, best-selling author Charles Frazier and legendary basketball coach Dean Smith have in common? They are among 10 recipients of the 2008 North Carolina Award, the state’s highest civilian honor. These three also have UNC ties. Brookhart is a groundbreaking professor of chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences; Frazier, the author of Cold Mountain, is an English graduate of the College, and Smith, a lifelong proponent of human rights, coached the Tar Heels for 36 amazing seasons, including two national championships.
